um... wtf?! - Round 2

Why did it crack?

I did minor sanding, primer, flat black, enamel gold and when I was applying the gold Gundam marker I noticed the crack.

Ugh. Now I have to break it to fix it right, sand then repaint.

Melting I can kind of understand but outright cracking of the piece?

  1. Could it be the enamel? I know you primed it, but I've read the enamel does weaken plastic and leads it to crack...

  5. flat enamel but thinned out a lot. i think its the enamel thats doing the damage. it seems to be weakening the plastic. cant seem to find a way around it tho

  7. Enamel thinner does indeed weaken plastic. However you primed the piece, so it should technically be protected unless the thinner ate through the primer.

The other possibility I can think of which has happened to me before is that heavily thinned paint sometimes leaks into the interior of a part, where you most likely didn't prime because you weren't going to paint the inside. This causes it to eat at the plastic from the interior.

  8. A rule of thumb I usually use is to just acrylic paints if possible. Enamels have a lot drawbacks for me in that they're a bitch to clean and sometimes the combos of painting acrylics over enamels and and enamels over acrylics doesn't always come out looking how I want. I've never personally had a problem with enamels causing damage to the plastic, but I usually find myself putting multiple layers of primer and acrylic between the enamel and the plastic.
Then...there's always a possibility the piece itself was just defective...

  9. A1S - yeah thats exactly what I did, minus the priming again part.

Derringer - all of those are possible. i'm going to have to try and be more mindful of that in the future.

anon - never really considered the fact that the piece just might have been flawed itself. who knows. id like to move away from enamels but... i have an abudance of them now so... i just use what i got and try to make the best of it.

  10. I'd say the enamel thinner has gotten inside the muzzle would be a prett good guess, and also that in a free UC novel bazooka you may not be getting superior Bandai quality...
