MG Titanium Finish RX-78-2 - Complete

It was a true joy to make this. Some of the nub marks were really terrible so I used what Gundam Markers I had to help make it look slightly better. I did a lot of work on the frame for this model and spent a lot of time on the little details. As I mentioned before this was a going away present from my volleyball team so I wanted to do it justice. Here are some pics.

This is the Gundam I'm happy to do.  Titanium Finish MG RX-78-2 V.2.0

I truly think I am addicted to Gundams sometimes.  While at the same time feeling like "I'm the guy who used to build Gundams".  Now I'm the guy who "makes" Gundams.


I have NO backlog.  Everything is built.  This MG is the last one and then finally everything is built.  And all I have to do for that is the armour now.


Yes I'm going to take my time with this because this is the one I love.  This was a GIFT from my volleyball team and I'm going to make it worthy of them!  That means "time" and "patience"... And my favourite thing... Meticulousness.

No I'm not done but I'm working on it. Just taking my time. Nothing more to build! It's nice actually. I can actually focus on making one of these things as great as I want it to be. SO looking forward to the "Mark 2 Project".

Happy to do Gundams. As it should be.

ANA Gundams

Looking at this I can't help but feel really lucky. ASM hooked me up with the RX-78 in August during the 1/1 pilgrimage. He bought the 00 for me later but him and Gaigun split the cost and gave it to me as a going away present! The generousity!

Thanks guys! I REALLY appreciate it! It's so beautiful! The O Raiser is also built but isn't featured in this pic.

Note: The kit comes with a simple 3 part stand that should be standard in every HG from now on in my opinion. It's so simple I don't see why they wouldn't do it. Cheap and effective.

Anyway I love this kit.  I have a bit more love for the 00 after building this.  I also have a lot more love for extra finish kits.  Nubs are a pain but the overall look compared to the work put in makes it worth it to me.

RG RX-78-2 Gundam - Leg repair

Long overdue post but here it is finally. As I was building the frame the leg broke because the joint was stiffer than the plastic. I guess I didn't work it loose gently enough, although I'm not really sure how I could have done it better. I'll be more careful next time.

Anyway, after the break... I took a break. Came back to later after I found the parts I needed to fix it, namely a 1mm drill bit and 1mm steel rods.

Tools required.

Here's where it broke.

Where I drilled the holes.  Had to be pretty precise with this as there wasn't really much room for error. 90 degree angle straight down the shaft of the leg plastic.  Worked out fine luckily. 

Insert rod.  No jokes please.

Cut rod, apply cement to the broken surfaces, insert into bottom half.  Apply some pressure for a couple of seconds while the cement dries in place.

Leave it to dry for a while, test it out gently. Works perfectly.  Actually I think it's stronger now than it was before.

No problems standing on it's own now.

Following this I could continue my work on the model and it was really a joy to build and detail. I'm still suffering from weapons block now as the main suit is completed but... I'm glad to have it done and standing with the rest of it's 1/144 brothers.

RG RX-78-2 + MS Hangar

Patience has never been my strong point. Couldn't wait. Even when I got there shortly after lunch time there were only a couple of kits and magazines left. I know there's a chance that I could win this in the HLJ Contest but it's a long shot and you can't live your life thinking "maybe" all the time. If I do end up winning it by some miracle I'll still be happy. And I know I could probably buy this kit later after the contest results have been announced but that's a long time from now and... I can't wait to see how this new RG series holds up.

There are tons of reviews out there already so I won't bother but I will be posting my thoughts about it later.

Right now I'm currently on the fence on whether I should paint it or not. I kind of want to build the kit as is and use all the things provided just so I can finally have a proper finished un-modded RX-78-2 but... that's just so boring to me... So like most things I'm probably going to put my own spin on it. Change the colour and leave some of the decals off. Oh I'm excited about this!

The MS hangar isn't really anything special but I'm going to use it. I like having extra 1/144 scale goods for sake of comparison.

Down Goes the Gundam

Never got a chance to see it in person myself. What a shame... but surely they can't just let those parts just sit in a warehouse somewhere doing nothing. I bet you they're going to put it up some place else someday. Hope it's soon! It'd be such a waste to just throw those parts away. I mean it was up for what? Like a month? Ridiculous.

Decided! "Super" XN-O Gundam w/ 30th Anniversary RX-78-2

Only July 8th, I first made this post about the XN Unit. Technically I shouldn't call it the XN Raiser unless it is combined with the O Raiser. In the manuals they call the unit by itself the XN Unit so that's what I'm going to refer to it as from now on. As you all know I ended up getting the O Gundam but not for the purpose of combining it with the XN Unit. I got it because I loved it and wanted to do a simultaneous build with the 30th Anniversary RX-78-2 (which, hence forth I will refer to as Odaiba Gundam).

After working on them both in Canada I came back to Japan when my XN Unit arrived shortly thereafter. After assembling the unit by itself (which gave me a surprising amount of difficulty! Backwards parts and I swear the instruction manual is actually incorrect in one section and can be a bit confusing at times.) I tried combining it with the O Gundam. It can fit into the slot on the back of the waist armour and in the slot where the GN Drive connects. I elected to leave the GN Drive in place and set it in the back skirt. I changed the configuration a bit and I finally got the XN Unit into a position that I was satisfied with. I intend on paint the XN Unit in the same colours as the O Gundam (modified roll out) and making it the "Super XN-O Gundam" paying homage to the "Super MK2 Gundam" I mentioned in the previous post. Take a look at some of my pics.

Yeah I know what I said about "No Flash" but I'm leaving those flash pics in just so you can see the details a bit clearer and to blot out the background nonsense (although I wouldn't call Milla Jovovich in her underwear nonsense)

Now you can see the core concept of what I'm going for with this project. The Odaiba Gundam is similar to my MG OYW isn't it? What can I say... I'm a fan of the 'Mace Muffler'!

Simultaneous build - 0 Gundam & 30th Anniversary RX-78-2

I'm going to interupt telling you about my Gundam's from home to update you on my current project.

I sprayed the coloured parts on the runners with some primer before I left Japan. This colour scheme will actually look similar to the final paint scheme I'm planning.

I'll tell you right now, both of these kits are amazing. The 0 Gundam has got a lot of movement and you can get some great poses with it. Same with 30th Anniversary Gundam. They both use the same polycap panel. I'll speak on the details more as I progress but here are some pics after they were assembled. I didn't even bother to remove the nubs. That process would come later.

Well I was thinking of a project for when I'm back in Canada. Simultaneous build of the oldest and the newest Gundam versions seems fitting for the 30 year anniversary of the franchise.

More Strike Vermillion + Where are they now? Current poses for my models

Thought it'd be nice if I put up some pics of the current poses that my 'boys' are in. I have a lot of models but these days I only keep the ones that I've painted/lined out. You can see the gallery for all of these models on the side bar.

Also there are couple of extra pics of the Strike Vermillion. More of that to come in the future but for now... I'm going to try and put that aside until my Astray is done. I think I can officially say that my distraction is now over. I'll put all of these pics up on my flickr in case there are any problems with the links.
